Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may occur where they live. This training helps individuals assist their communities during emergencies when professional responders may be overwhelmed or unavailable.

Several EPC volunteers have already gone through CERT training and found it to be very useful. In-person CERT training typically includes 20 hours of instruction and hands-on practice spread over three days. Don’t worry about the classes being physically demanding – they aren’t.

CERT topics include Emergency Preparedness, Incident Command System, Triage, Basic First Aid, Fire Suppression, Search and Rescue, etc.

Why get CERT Training?

Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet the demand for these services. Factors such as number of victims, communication failures, and road blockages will prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. People will have to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life saving and life sustaining needs.
